Expanded programme on immunization

Future goals and challenges

WHO will continue to work to eliminate measles by 2012 and reduce hepatitis B infection rates in children. WHO will also continue to support efforts to monitor the impact of immunization strategies, and where appropriate push for the introduction of cost-effective new vaccines.

China's surveillance network for polio and measles is currently the largest WHO-accredited laboratory surveillance network in the world. WHO will support initiatives to improve it and to expand it to cover other diseases.

Finally, WHO will work to ensure that the vaccines used in China are safe and effective, where necessary pushing for stronger vaccine regulation.
