WHO China launches new bilingual website

BEIJING, 30 January 2013 - The World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in China today launched a new bilingual (English and Chinese) website to share its work more broadly and strengthen its capacity to help improve the health and well-being of the people of China.

"This new website will communicate our determination to address the needs of China's people and ensure greater health opportunities for all," said Dr Michael O'Leary, WHO Representative in China.


Regional Director Shin praises China's commitment to health

BEIJING, 17 August 2012 - WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Dr Shin Young-soo visited China recently for high-level talks on WHO–China collaboration.

Dr Shin joined WHO Director-General Dr Margaret Chan for her presentation on 18 July of a Director-General's Special Recognition Certificate for tobacco control to China's Health Minister Chen Zhu.

BEIJING - Today on 18 July 2012, we witnessed the launch of the Western Area Health Initiative, which is a collaboration effort among the Ministry of Health, China, the World Health Organization, and three sub-national level governments, to improve the health of the people living in the Western part of China.

This formal launch, with signing of MOUs among Ministry of Health, high-level representatives from Shaanxi Province, Chongqing Municipality, and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and on behalf of WHO, both WHO's Director General and Regional Director, represents a major step in WHO’s work and relationship with China.


China Health Minister receives award for tobacco control from Director General of World Health Organization

BEIJING - On 18 July 2012, in a ceremony attended by Dr. Margaret Chan, WHO Director-General, Dr. Shin Yong-Soo, WHO Regional Director for the Western Pacific Region, and Dr Michael O'Leary, WHO Representative in China, Minister Chen Zhu received high recognition for his commitment to tobacco control.

Dr Margaret Chan praised Minister Chen Zhu's achievements in the fight against tobacco use, and his contribution to the global movement to end the burden of death and disease caused by tobacco.
