Essential package of child survival

Skilled attendance during pregnancy, delivery

Essential and promotive care during pregnancy includes at least four antenatal care (ANC) visits to deliver ANC package of interventions that include: counselling on self-care, nutrition, safe sex, breastfeeding, birth spacing; Tetanus toxoid immunization; iron and folate supplementation; detection and management of infections (including syphilis) and complications; malaria prevention; prevention of mother-to child transmission of HIV and birth and emergency planning. During delivery and the immediate postpartum, it is necessary to have a skilled attendant who can ensure a safe and clean delivery, trained on basic emergency obstetric and neonatal care and can recognize complications for referral. Postpartum care for both mother and the newborn is crucial to establish breastfeeding and to counsel the mother on basic neonatal care, as well as prompt care-seeking for maternal or neonatal problems.
