The Asia Pacific Observatory on Health Systems and Policies (APO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the World Health Organization Lao Office jointly launched the Lao People’s Democratic Republic Health System in Transition (HiT) Report.

The launch was well-attended by Ministry of Health officers from provincial directors to department and cabinet members. The ceremony was presided over by two vice ministers: Professor Bounkong Syhavong and Professor Som Ock Kingsada. Vice Minister Professor Bounkong Syhavong offered congratulations in his opening remarks, citing the importance of HiT report as the first such health system analysis in the country. He said the report will help evaluate the country health sector reform efforts. “We are looking forward to having another HiT, ” he said.

WHO Representative Dr Juliet Fleischl also called the HiT report a valuable milestone. In particular, she said the report will be a very important source of information for the health sector, policy-makers, implementers, researchers, development partners and other stakeholders because the report provides detailed information and analysis on the development of the health system. The report also captures “the progress made with the health sector reform agenda in the country,” she said.
